Climate denialists vs creationists

Who’d have thought that climate change denialists were even more amusing than creationists?  My post on Climate Debate Daily really brought out some strange ones.  While I wasn’t looking, the libertarian capitalists have embraced the logic and language of the Soviets.  “Freedom” means denying reality (climate change) in order to prop up the approved systems of production, no matter how outdated or inefficient they are.

The IDists have already embraced Lysenkoist “science”.   Now their friends, who call themselves “capitalists” (but defend a statists model of government designed to funnel public money into the hands of their cronies), seem set to embrace the rest of the Soviet model.  Fun, fun.

  1. Ian, From all appearances, you’re a complete ideologue. Science to you seems to be a kind of ideological construction to use as a cudgel against things one disapproves of morally. Your whole m.o. seems to be to lump careful, appropriately skeptical scientists and thinkers in together with creationists and Lysenkoists. If you deny that there is in fact a real, roiling debate among scientists over the extent, causes, and implications of warming, then you are clearly the denialist. You can only get so far with a bullying and shaming campaign to herd real scientists into an increasingly intellectual fragile consensus. I think YOU sound like a Lysenkoist, more politics than science. But that’s hardly helpful. So how about arguing on the scientific merits rather than meta-arguing about the motives and immaturity of those who disagree with you? If you want to moralize on the basis of your prejudices, go ahead and moralize. But don’t mistake that for anything having to do with science.

  2. “Empiracist”: Nice piece of intellectual dishonesty. Science is science. Opinion is opinion. I keep the two separate.

Climate denialists and creationists use precisely the same tactics. So why not lump them? The creationists say “teach the controversy”, when there isn’t one. The pro-smoking lobby used the same tactics. We saw the same tactics when they were denying acid rain. Yes, there is a real debate in climate science. Your insults to the contrary, I have said as much in reply to your previous comment.

Yes, and people who don’t accept evolution are “Expelled” from academia. Again, the climate denialist preach from the exact same script as the creationists.

Ah yes, that famous debate tool “I know you are, but what am I”. You do realise that your argument doesn’t have much weight post-elementary school, right?

So how about arguing on the scientific merits rather than meta-arguing about the motives and immaturity of those who disagree with you?

You know, rather than using childish insults and then following them up with mock indignation, you could just refrain from using childish insults. That would be far simpler, wouldn’t it?

If you want to moralize on the basis of your prejudices, go ahead and moralize.

That’s rather magnanimous of you to give me permission to express opinions in my blog. I will return the favour and say that I give you permission to express opinions in your blog, should you care to start one.

But don’t mistake that for anything having to do with science.

I am well aware of what constitutes science. Thank you for your admonition. And what field of science do you have your PhD in?
