It hadn’t dawned on me until a moment ago that today was the anniversary of the WTC attacks. And at that point it struck me how badly debased the anniversary has become. Beneath all the political posturing and sloganeering, there’s a real tragedy. But it has been almost completely lost beneath the (primarily Republican) co-option of the even as an election tool, an excuse to invade Iraq, a way to enrich their friends, undermine democracy…
People died. And they died horribly, knowing they were trapped. Hollywood has taught us to expect miracles, that people will somehow make it out, somehow be rescued. I think that sense of fantasy makes us poorly prepared for tragic reality.
And they continue to die, this time for an imperial dream that was stillborn, this time for a war that was lost years ago.
