My pictures fail to capture the scale of the damage. One picture here, another there, fails to give a sense of how pervasive the damage is to the trees on campus. The trip onto campus this morning was really sad. Broken trees everywhere. South Oval is just devastated. We live in a slightly newer part of town, with younger trees, so I wasn’t prepared for the damage I saw. It was heartbreaking.

Over half a million people are reported to be without power this morning. Our water treatment plant is apparently without power, and the city is borrowing water from surrounding towns. Although the temperatures are above freezing, there’s still a lot of ice out there. The ice brought down a lot of trees – onto powerlines, across roads, into buildings and cars. And as ice-laden as they are, more will probably fall before the ice melts.
